The Jamie Francis Agency in Muskogee, Oklahoma, has been named a Safeco Change Agent - earning a $2,000 donation from Safeco to The Barracks of Muskogee. Here, agency owner Jamie Francis tells the story of her company's commitment to community and how she supports The Barracks.
I opened my agency just last summer - in July 2017 - and I want it to be a business that is a force for good in the community. Four months later, I'm proud to say that mission is off to a great start.
I got involved with The Barracks of Muskogee after we opened, because I believe what they're doing for our veterans is remarkable.
The organization currently is renovating an old nursing home to create a 10-bed facility for veterans and their families. The goal is to provide a location where they will find love and support, consolidated VA resources and job-related services. Most important, it will be a place they can call their own.
This project was challenging enough already - but when vandals broke into the facility a few months ago, stealing supplies and causing significant damage, it became even more so.
I spent a day helping sweep and clean up the building, and also volunteered at Bikelahoma, an all-day fundraiser for The Barracks featuring music, food, activities, and (of course) bikes. Watching our community come together to help with this project was awesome, and I was so glad to be a part of it.
When it comes to volunteering and serving others, it's important to just get out there! Even if you don't have much time, a little truly goes a long way. Everybody has some way to give back, and you never know - your contribution could be that little extra push an organization really needs to reach a goal or a milestone.
By putting yourself out there, you'll inspire others to get involved, too. I've connected with people I never would have met ordinarily, and it's helping me to create an extended network of friends and "family" - for me and my business. It's an incredibly rewarding experience.
