Program Basics

How much money can we save with the Teen Safe Driver Discount?

In most states, a 15% discount is applied to most coverages on the vehicle that the teen will drive most often. In many cases, the premium savings will be larger than the monthly service fee of the program.

How much will this program cost?

For most vehicles, the basic version of the Teen Safe Driver Discount program will cost as little as $9.95 per month with no additional fees or commitment. You may purchase additional features but it is not required. Some vehicles are not compatible with the basic solution and you may be offered other options that may cost more.

What do I have to do to receive the Teen Safe Driver Discount?

Ask your local Safeco agent to sign you up for the discount. They will be able to tell you if you are eligible and how much you will save. You will receive the discount immediately after signing up, but participation in the program is required to continue receiving the discount.

Can I opt out of the Teen Safe Driver Discount?

Yes. If at any time you no longer wish to participate, you will be asked to return the data collection device and the discount will be removed from your policy.

Eligibility

Who is eligible to participate in the Teen Safe Driver Discount?

Any Safeco customer between the ages of 16 – 25 is eligible.

Which vehicles are eligible for the Teen Safe Driver Discount?

Most vehicles that are 1996 or newer are eligible for the solution costs as little as $9.95 per month. This solution requires an OBDII port, which is included in all vehicles manufactured after 1996. There will be alternatives that work on any vehicle for additional cost.

Is there a fee for this program?

The monthly subscription is the only cost associated with the program, and there is no long-term commitment. If you decide not to participate within the first six months, any unused pre-payment will be refunded.

Is the cost of the program part of my insurance premium?

No. The cost of the program is billed independently from your policy.

Do I own the Teen Safe Driver Discount device?

No. The device must be returned upon program completion or if you decide to opt out early.

Data, Privacy and Technologys

What driving data does the device collect?

The device captures mileage, speed, braking, acceleration, date/ time, location and the VIN.

How is the data transferred, and where is the data stored?

The device automatically transfers the data to a secure database that is administered by a trusted third party. After summarizing and organizing the data, the data is made available to you via a secure website. The driving data summary report card will be emailed weekly.

Does Safeco obtain vehicle location data?

No. Even though the device includes GPS technology, Safeco does not have access to your vehicle’s location.

How does Safeco use the driving data?

Safeco uses aggregated and anonymized driving data to design future programs. However, Safeco does not use the driving data collected via this program to adjust your rates or penalize you in any way.

Does Safeco use driving data for any rate adjustments?

No. Driving data is available to you via a secure third party website (Safeco does not share customer data, except as required by law). Safeco will not penalize you based on the driving data collected via this program – including increasing your rate or disqualifying you for insurance.

What if my teen is a bad driver?

Safeco will not penalize you based on driving data collected via this program. Your insurance rates will not change, and your policy will not be affected. You will qualify for the Teen Safe Driver Discount as long as you use the device and your teen is 25 years old or younger.

Insurance Policy

How is my auto insurance premium affected when I sign up for the Teen Safe Driver Discount?

Upon enrollment, you will receive a discount up to 15% on most coverages for the vehicle that your participating teen drives most often. To keep the discount, the device must be installed in the vehicle at all times.

How is my auto insurance premium affected if my participating teen does not leave the device installed in the vehicle or does not install the Teen Safe Driver Discount device?

You will be removed from the program and the discount will be removed from your policy.

How is my auto insurance premium affected if the data collection device is removed or my teen drops out of the program?

The discount will be removed from your policy as a mid-term endorsement.

How long does the discount apply?

The discount will continue until your teen turns 25 or when you decide to opt out or remove the device from the vehicle.

Installation

What happens after I sign up for the Teen Safe Driver Discount?

You will receive a confirmation email with a link to an enrollment website where you can purchase a driving data service and set up account information to receive the driving data report card.

How do I receive the Teen Safe Driver Discount device?

The device and installation instructions will be mailed to you, after you have created your account.

In which vehicle should I install the device?

The device is installed in the vehicle that your Safeco agent selected on the policy, which should be the vehicle your teen drives most often. The vehicle will be specified in your enrollment documentation or you can ask your agent.

Can I switch the device between different vehicles?

Each device can only be used in the vehicle selected during the enrollment process. It should not be removed from the vehicle or switched between vehicles.

Is the data collection device easy to install?

Yes. For most cars, the device simply plugs into the OBD-II port which is located under the dash near the steering wheel. This usually takes less than a minute, and no tools are required.

How soon do I need to install the Teen Safe Driver Discount device?

After receiving the device, you should install it within a week. If the device is not installed within a week, Safeco will email or call you with a reminder, and your Safeco agent will also be notified.

What happens if I still doesn’t install the Teen Safe Driver Discount device after receiving a reminder?

Customers who do not install the device will be removed from the program, and the discount will be removed from your policy.

Is my teen allowed to remove the device?

No. Teens are expected to keep the device installed in their primary vehicle at all times to continue to receive the discount. To prevent tampering, the device is able to detect when it has been disconnected and which vehicle it is installed in.

Should the device be removed when drivers other than the participating teen use the vehicle?

No. Safeco does not use (or rate on) the data collected from the vehicle but will discontinue the discount if the device is frequently removed from the vehicle.

Completion

What happens when my teen completes the Teen Safe Driver Discount program?

You will receive a letter and an email indicating that the discount no longer applies to your policy. The letter will include a pre-paid return envelope with instructions for removing the device and returning it.
