California Medical Provider Network (MPN)

Using the Network

The Safeco Medical Provider Network, or MPN, is a Worker's Compensation program that we are jointly delivering with Coventry Workers' Comp Services, a nationally recognized company that specializes in occupational health, disability management, and medical cost-management.

The MPN will be delivered through Coventry's network of medical providers and facilities. By utilizing the MPN for industrial injuries, you will be able to influence the medical direction of care on your Worker's Compensation claims. With some exceptions, a claim that falls within the MPN will then have all medical treatment provided exclusively within the network.

To utilize the Medical Provider Network, you must follow these requirements:

  • Provide all employees a copy of the MPN Employee Handbook (available in English [DOC] or Spanish) [DOC] at the time of MPN implementation or at the time of hire
  • Post a listing using the Medical Provider Search within the MPN in your area
  • Display the appropriate State of California Posting Notice at your worksite(s)

In addition, at the time of injury you must:

  • Report the injury immediately to Safeco at (800) 332-3226
  • Provide an Employee Claim Form (DWC 1) [PDF] to the injured worker
  • Direct all employees to a medical provider within the MPN. This will most often be an occupational clinic or hospital (for more serious injuries). You can find these medical providers in the MPN Medical Provider Directory. Injured employees can later change physicians within the MPN, but you should direct the first visit for medical treatment
  • Complete the Employer's First Report of Injury [PDF]

The following materials will help you administer the MPN at your business:

MPN Employee Handbook (English [DOC] or Spanish) [DOC] Distribute this handbook to all current employees, future employees, and employees who experience an injury in your workplace.
Employer Site Coordinator Guide [DOC] Access all the information you need to know as an employer about administering claims using the MPN.
MPN Medical Provider Locator Use this to locate providers within the MPN. You can also create and print custom provider directories, and post notices for your workplace.

Note regarding the initial implementation of the MPN:

Please be advised that the regulations governing the MPN require you, the employer, to take certain actions. Failure to meet the requirements may result in the inability to utilize the MPN. Information on the MPN is included in the Policyholder Claims Kit.

When you are notified of a work-related injury, please contact us at: (800) 332-3226.
