Programs
Education
Safeco Insurance Foundation gives priority to educational programs that encourage disadvantaged youth to excel academically and create opportunities for life-long success through learning.
Populations
Youth
Safeco Insurance Foundation invests much of its funding in youth. Priority is given to programs serving children and teenagers.
Low-Income Families and Individuals
The Foundation favors organizations and programs that create opportunities for self-sufficiency for low-income individuals and families.
People with Disabilities
Safeco Insurance Foundation supports organizations and projects that promote the participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of our communities.
Types of Support
General Operating Support
General operating funds are considered for agencies whose missions closely align with the mission of Safeco Insurance Foundation.
Program Support
Organizations with missions that are not educational or health and safety-related are encouraged to request specific project funding relevant to the programmatic thrust and priorities of our philanthropy program.
Capital Funding
Occasionally, the Foundation provides funding to the capital campaigns of organizations whose missions closely align to that of the Safeco Insurance Foundation.
Sponsorships
In addition to the philanthropic categories above, Safeco Insurance occasionally provides support through sponsorship of local events. These requests are not considered through the Safeco Insurance Foundation. Please visit the Community Sponsorships page to learn more.
Application Procedures
To apply for a grant from the Safeco Insurance Foundation please use one of the links below. Grant applications are submitted online and are reviewed every six weeks.
Restrictions
Safeco Insurance Foundation does not provide philanthropic support for:
- Individuals
- Foundations that are primarily grantmaking agencies
- Organizations requesting funds for sectarian activities
- Fraternal, social, labor or political organizations
- Trips, tours and transportation
- Deficit spending or debt liquidation
- Conferences, forums or special events
- Organizations that have applied within the past 12 months
- Non-functionally integrated supporting organizations as classified by the IRS

American Red Cross Snohomish County Chapter
The American Red Cross has been operating in Snohomish County since 1916, fulfilling its national mission to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
Clatsop Community Action
Clatsop Community Action serves low-income residents of Clatsop County, Oregon, providing emergency food, housing, energy assistance, and other critical services to those in need.
FareStart
FareStart provides an opportunity for homeless and disadvantaged men, women and families to achieve self-sufficiency through life skills, job training and employment in the food service industry.
Food Lifeline
Food Lifeline is a nonprofit food distribution agency working to provide nutritious food to hungry, low-income people in Western Washington state.
Oregon Outreach
Oregon Outreach offers an accredited academic program and support system to struggling Portland-area youth, assisting students to succeed in the classroom, at home and in the community.
Portland Reading Foundation
Portland Reading Foundation works with local school districts to identify students at-risk for failing to learn to read, and provides instruction to ensure that each child has the opportunity to become a proficient reader.
Portland Rescue Mission
Portland Rescue Mission is the city's largest source of emergency shelter, providing for the most basic needs of homeless men, women, and children.
Portland YouthBuilders
Portland YouthBuilders supports low income young men and women to become self-sufficient, contributing members of the workforce through a multi-year program of education, vocational training, leadership development, and community service.
Rainier Scholars
Rainier Scholars is a long term, comprehensive college prep program that cultivates the academic potential of talented and motivated young scholars from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Refugee Women's Alliance
Refugee Women's Alliance is a multi-ethnic organization that promotes inclusion, independence, personal leadership, and strong communities by providing refugee and immigrant women and families with culturally and linguistically appropriate services.
Solid Ground
Solid Ground's mission is to achieve a just and caring community free from poverty, prejudice and neglect by developing and providing creative, comprehensive and effective responses to our community's needs.
Technology Access Foundation
Technology Access Foundation prepares underserved students of color and low- income students for both college and careers, providing them with the educational skills needed to graduate on time, and to excel in science, technology, engineering and math fields.
