Seattle, Wash. (June 25, 2012) — We asked people across the country to vote for their favorite Safeco® Community Hero and the results are in! Dawn Hammacott and Manny Topper are the first-place and runner-up winners.
These top two community heroes have each won an additional donation from Safeco Insurance for the charities they support. Community Culinary School of Northwestern Connecticut, which provides opportunities for unemployed and under-employed individuals to attain self-sufficiency through a new career in food service, will receive $10,000 on behalf of Hammacott. Hatzalah of Baltimore in Maryland, an all-volunteer group that provides emergency services, will receive $5,000 on behalf of Topper.
These grants are in addition to the $5,000 checks that Safeco has already given to each organization. Safeco presents Community Hero Awards annually to local heroes who make a difference in their community and then provides a donation to the nonprofit they support on behalf of the hero and the agent who nominated them.
Hammacott was nominated for the Safeco Community Hero award by Jeffrey Kilberg, vice president at Nicholas/Tobin, New Milford, Conn. Topper was nominated by Chaim Wealcatch, vice president at Herman E. Wealcatch, Baltimore, Md.
Safeco received more than 90 applications for a Community Hero Award. Hammacott and Topper were among the 14 finalists and came out on top in the Vote for your Favorite Safeco Community Hero event that ended June 25.
Over the three-week contest, more than 21,600 total votes were cast for all the heroes.
