Safeco Insurance™ recognizes Scott and Kelly Driscoll as Community Heroes

Seattle, Wash. (Aug. 17, 2011) — Safeco Insurance has recognized Scott and Kelly Driscoll as Community Heroes for their work with the Quinn Driscoll Foundation, Vancouver, Wash., which will receive a $2,000 donation from Safeco on behalf of Biggs Insurance Services, Vancouver.

The Driscolls were nominated for the Safeco Community Hero award by Richard Biggs, owner of Biggs Insurance Services.

Each year Safeco celebrates local heroes who make a positive difference through its Agent Giving Program that’s designed to focus on three areas: education, health and safety, and civic engagement.

“Safeco applauds community heroes, like Kelly and Scott, who share their gifts for giving and action,” said Brenda Mann Harrison, manager, Safeco Insurance Agent Giving Program. “We also thank Biggs Insurance Services for nominating the Driscolls and its commitment to community involvement.”

Scott and Kelly established the Quinn Driscoll Foundation in 2010 to honor the legacy of their son, Quinn, whose heart was twice the size of a normal 13-year-old’s and claimed his life in June of 2009 while he jogged in gym class.

The Driscolls learned that thousands of children under age 18 die from an undetected heart condition each year. Quinn suffered from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). HCM and many other undetected heart diseases result in sudden cardiac arrest. The Driscolls didn't let personal tragedy paralyze them. Instead, they established the Quinn Driscoll Foundation in 2010 to honor their son’s legacy and serve a three-fold mission:

  • Educate parents, teachers, athletic directors, coaches and the medical community about the risks, symptoms and proactive detection of heart defects and diseases that cause sudden cardiac arrest. The foundation accomplishes this through its website (, literature, public speaking events and informational meetings.
  • Sponsor, coordinate and manage free or subsidized cardiac screening events to identify potential risks of sudden cardiac arrest in young people. Cardiac screening events are scheduled on an annual or bi-annual basis.
  • Provide community organizations, sports organizations, schools and other facilities with automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The Quinn Driscoll Foundation has established a grant process for the donation of AEDs to those organizations that meet certain qualifications or criteria.
