Safeco Insurance Foundation supports focus on education with new $800,000 grant

SEATTLE, Wash. (Sept. 18, 2012) — A decade-long dream becomes reality in October when a new community learning center opens in Seattle’s White Center neighborhood, giving the Technology Access Foundation (TAF) the space it needs to reach 20,000 students annually with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

This new learning center – the Bethaday Community Learning Space – is being built in part thanks to financial support from individuals, foundations, government agencies and corporations.

“Every donation to the Bethaday Community Learning Space project makes a difference, but we’re especially excited to announce a new $800,000 grant from the Safeco Insurance Foundation, bringing its total contributions to $1 million,” said Trish Millines Dziko, TAF’s co-founder and executive director. “Safeco Insurance is a true partner committed to our success and the success of the thousands of kids we’re helping. Safeco has supported us financially since 1998, and company employees have gone beyond that by regularly volunteering their time with us.”

Support from the Safeco Insurance Foundation, which was particularly impressed with TAF’s program results over the years, is being given as a “Transformational Grant” that is intended to help nonprofit programs make a major addition, change or transformation to its services.

“As a strong supporter of education, the Safeco Insurance Foundation is proud to help TAF expand its educational reach into our community and move the organization closer to achieving its $12.5 million fundraising goal,” said Matthew Nickerson, Safeco Insurance president. “Safeco Insurance has been a longtime supporter of TAF, both financially and through the volunteer efforts of our employees. This grant is one of the best ways we can show we believe in the positive impact of TAF’s work.”

For 16 years, TAF has prepared the community – particularly students of color and those from low-income families – for success in college and life by providing STEM–focused after-school and school-day programs. Until now, TAF’s outreach and capacity to assist more students has been limited by space constraints. The Bethaday Community Learning Space – a 24,000 square foot building expected to earn LEED certification – will change all that.

When the Bethaday Community Learning Space is finished next month, it will feature four wireless learning labs, group and private academic support rooms, a robotics lab, project space, a community multipurpose room with catering kitchen, and more.
