Safeco Insurance Foundation Awards $700,000 in Grants

SEATTLE, Wash. (Aug. 26, 2013) — Safeco Insurance Foundation today announced the 30 nonprofits throughout Oregon and Washington that will receive 2013 Education Initiative grants totaling $700,000.

“These nonprofit organizations are opening the doors to education for many of our local kids,” said Paul Hollie, director, Safeco Insurance Foundation. “By supporting the good work that they do throughout the Northwest, the Safeco Insurance Foundation hopes to help more young students find opportunities to succeed.”

Safeco Insurance Foundation first introduced Education Initiative grants in 2009 with the goal to improve the educational achievements and opportunities for disadvantaged youth within Washington and Oregon. The grants are intended to support organizations that:

  • Offer out-of-school educational programs, extended learning in-school programs and vocational and technical training programs;
  • Focus on elementary-level programs emphasizing basic literacy and numeracy;
  • Provide English language instruction for non-English speakers;
  • Create pathways for older youth to re-engage with the educational system.

With the latest set of grant winners, Safeco Insurance Foundation’s total investment in the Education Initiative will reach nearly $3.5 million across 60 nonprofit organizations with proven positive results.

Earlier this year, the Safeco Insurance was recognized for the foundation’s focus on education with a Healthy Community Corporate Champion award by the Puget Sound Business Journal. The honor was given to Safeco Insurance in recognition of above-and-beyond overall giving in the previous year, embracing corporate philanthropy as part of the company’s culture, and showing significant impact on the community with its giving programs.
