Liberty Mutual Insurance Announces Mike Hughes as President, Business Insurance; Matthew Nickerson named President, Safeco Insurance

Seattle, Wash. (July 25, 2012) — Liberty Mutual Insurance today announced that effective July 24th, Mike Hughes, President of Safeco Insurance, is President, Business Insurance of Liberty Mutual’s new Commercial Insurance business unit. Matthew (Matt) Nickerson, formerly Safeco’s chief operating officer, is President, Safeco Insurance.

Mr. Hughes, who was named Safeco’s president after the company was acquired by Liberty Mutual four years ago, will relocate to Liberty Mutual’s headquarters in Boston, Mass.

Mr. Nickerson has been Safeco’s chief operating officer serving on Mr. Hughes’ executive team for the past four years.

“Under Mike’s leadership, the Safeco brand has become an integral component of our national strategy to sell personal insurance through the independent agent network,” said David H. This executive announcement is part of a realignment of Liberty Mutual’s four strategic business units. Safeco Insurance is part of the Personal Insurance business unit, which includes all domestic personal lines business. Safeco and Liberty Mutual brands and products will be maintained, and distribution channels will continue to be managed separately.

Liberty Mutual’s other three strategic business units are Commercial Insurance, Global Specialty and Liberty International.
