Seattle, Wash. – (April 28, 2011) – Safeco Insurance has named Mary Ferrell a Community Hero for her work with The Maslow Project, which will receive a $5,000 donation from Safeco on behalf of Ferrell and Western States Insurance, Medford, Ore.
Ferrell was nominated for the Safeco Community Hero award by Reggie Jones, producer, of Western States Insurance.
Each year Safeco celebrates local heroes who make a positive difference through its Agent Giving Program that’s designed to focus on three areas: education, health and safety, and civic engagement.
“Safeco applauds community heroes, like Mary, who share their gifts for giving and action,” said Brenda Mann Harrison, manager, Safeco Insurance Agent Giving Program. “We also thank Western States Insurance for nominating Mary and its commitment to community involvement.”
Seven years ago, Ferrell founded The Maslow Project, a nationally recognized outreach and resource center that works with families, schools and social service agencies to break down barriers that homeless and troubled youth face. The Maslow Project actively seeks out at-risk children who otherwise may fall through the cracks.
As the executive director, Ferrell works with local schools to identify homeless children in Oregon's Jackson County. Jackson County has the second-highest number of homeless and at-risk children in the state: an estimated 2,000. The organization's name and purpose are inspired by Abraham Maslow’s pyramid-shaped Hierarchy of Needs. Basic needs come first: food, water, shelter and clothing. Additional support services such as education, counseling, mentoring, tutoring and job skills follow.
Maslow Project staffers first ensure children have access to food, hygiene supplies, clothing and shoes. In addition to providing mentoring groups, the next step is to facilitate access to community partners that provide educational, employment and personal development programs. The Maslow Project is a goal-oriented program that strives to help young people become self-sufficient and develop essential life skills.
