Seattle, Wash. (Aug. 22, 2011) — Safeco Insurance has named Len Hebert a Community Hero for his work with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Rogue Valley District Council, which will receive a $5,000 donation from Safeco on behalf of Herbert and Western States Insurance Agency, Medford, Ore.
Bonomo was nominated for the Safeco Community Hero award by Jose U. Sanchez, personal lines sales executive, of Western States Insurance Agency.
Each year Safeco celebrates local heroes who make a positive difference through its Agent Giving Program that’s designed to focus on three areas: education, health and safety, and civic engagement.
“Safeco applauds community heroes, like Len, who share their gifts for giving and action,” said Brenda Mann Harrison, manager, Safeco Insurance Agent Giving Program. “We also thank the Western States Insurance Agency for nominating Lori and its commitment to community involvement.”
Hebert is credited for leading the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Rogue Valley District Council, through a significant period of growth and ensuring it could continue to provide help and support for local people at or below the poverty level. Part of the renowned St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Rogue Valley District Council is based in Medford, Ore. Each council is locally organized, funded and staffed and has no financial connection to any other organization.
Hebert oversaw a successful capital funds campaign from 2003 to 2005. The ensuing $3 million helped build a new thrift store, double the size of the emergency shelter, and remodel the kitchen, pantry and administrative offices.
In 2005, Hebert stepped into the role of the council's president. During his term, he retired its debt and established a reserve fund and an endowment. He also helped build an Urban Rest Stop, giving homeless people access to showers and laundry services. The council also set up monthly dental clinic and health screenings.
